I went to bed early last night. Fighting a cold. Funny how a little thing like sleep can fend off the most destructive forces. Physical and emotional. This cold will not get the best of me because I'm aware it seeks to take all my strength and I need it. I will not part with it.

So, I went to bed, happy that I'm at a stage in life where I know my body enough to pay attention and listen. I just can't afford to let something like a cold zap my energy anymore...if I can help it.

It seems to have worked...

As I was getting ready this morning the chalkboard quote in the picture above came to mind. I resonate with it today. It's one of those days. I stop to reflect and what I find is I have veered off the path I'm meant to be on right now. It's a strange and peculiar path and in its unfamiliarity it's easy to get sidetracked.

How does it happen? Chaos. Distractions. Too many things pulling at me. Scattered and running in too many different directions. Trying to wear too many hats....not enjoying the moment.

The good news is that all it takes is a moment of reflection and a purposeful prayer to get my feet back on track.

Although I didn't watch the Oscars, I did catch a glimpse here and there. And I was seriously hoping that at least one star would wear vintage. How exciting when I saw Natalie Portman strut down the Oscar red carpet wearing a polka-dotted, waist-defining vintage dress from designer Haute Couture Christian Dior from 1954. Pairing her vintage polka-dotted dress with a beautiful bold diamond necklace and a black clutch.

Today I'm focusing on fashion and the fast approaching April deadline (that I've made for myself) in the selling of shoes, clothes and accessories. Needless to say, I'm not at all ready. But then it's only February. Plenty of time. Right?

What I find interesting is how closely related fashion and decor are. The more I pour over the past in either category , I find they almost go hand in hand. I have been following this excellent blog for a bit now and thought I'd refer you to it as well. It's got plenty of eye candy for the vintage fashion fan. I know my Mom would have loved it.

Also on my fashion quest I found this fabulous video! It is a stunning look at Hong Kong...

After reading this quote, I can't help but wonder how different my home would look and feel if I hired a Lighting Designer".

Quite honestly, I didn't know there were such specialists.

This is my weakness folks. I really don't enjoy buying lamps and shades. I struggle spending the money required to create a beautifully lit room.

Still what a difference it makes! I recently grew very tired of my white (boring) shades in our living room and purchased 2 burlap shades (at two different stores for 2 different lamps). Our son noticed immediately as he entered the room that evening. This is a pretty big deal considering he doesn't usually notice things like that.

This cements the idea that the whole lighting package is important.

How does your laundry/area look these days? Mine is a little overrun with folded laundry and drips of liquid laundry soap. Tonight I plan on taking care of that and sprucing it up.

We found out today that our middle son & wife are having a BABY GIRL in July! Our oldest son & wife are having a BABY BOY in June!!! Could we be any more blessed?!!!
I can't even concentrate on anything else! Seriously doing the Grandma happy dance!!!

6 Phases later, the dresser project is finally done!

Here's the story behind this beautiful piece;

Mark rescued this antique dresser and thought we would just need to "polish 'er up"...but after getting it home realized it was a little rougher than he thought.

We decided we'd have to paint it. (Which quite honestly always thrills me!) The paint color decision is a joy. I mull around colors for days...

Anywhoooo...as Mark was sanding the dresser he thought the sides could use something more than just paint. This was when he mentioned gluing material to the sides and then maybe even the drawer fronts? Since I've been crushing on burlap for a couple of years now, that is what came to mind!

We primed and painted the dresser a soft wheat color and applied the burlap.

The next morning we noticed glue streaks where I had applied the burlap. We were so disappointed! All that work and then this! ugh!!!

We thought we could paint the burlap. Or....I could try stenciling a fun swirly pattern to see if it "disappears".

Needless to say, IT WORKED! And is even more gorgeous because of it!!!
What I love about this dresser story is how beauty can come in unexpected ways; flaws & blunders. When there is a piece of furniture that has "good bones" it always has potential for new life!

If I do say so myself, it is the most beautiful piece at Whimsy~ever!

As Monday winds down for most folks, I want you to know that I will not rest until all projects are done and put in their place at Whimsy! Why the "push" you ask? Well, because it's time for a change and we have some new pieces! And we have a rather full schedule the next couple of weeks, company and a wedding.

Sorry for the delay in blogging folks. I have been "out of commission" so to speak.
Between the dentist and the flu...it's not been a fun week.
But, all is well...especially after I got to watch The Nate Show almost the entire week. (Sure I was feeling cruddy on the couch but I made do!)

Now there's just a lot of catching up.
I've put away the Valentines leftovers here at Whimsy and now trying to finish up some long over due projects. Hopefully on Monday (my day off) I'll put it all together?

I am posting a couple of pic's that have little or nothing to do with the store Whimsy but are "whimsical"!

I am tellin' ya! Having Sunday's & Monday's off are just what the doctor ordered!    But especially Monday's! Sunday is fine and dandy but still a leetle busy with church and all. Still, it's not work.
Today was a really mellow day.  A no makeup day. (That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!) I worked on a couple of projects but didn't get 'em done. No sweat. Tomorrow and Wednesday...

Found a real treasure at the checkout of Walmart this evening! Stars! (they must be a seasonal chocolate?) because they were nowhere to be found the last couple of months.
$3.48 a bag! Not too shabby.
So Rita & Debbie, after supper tonight I need to walk an extra mile or two. Gahh!
I don't mind putting the blame on ya'll. All that talk about Stars did me in! Ha!

Okay so onto the serious schtuff, I'm planning on revamping the store on Wednesday with a whole new look. Or at least mixing it up and adding new pieces! I will post pictures then!

Mark and I were brain storming what to do with a dresser we bought a while back. It is an awesome piece but in rough shape. The "bones" are still good and we saw the potential in it with its dove tailed extra large drawers. It has these beautiful pillar like columns on each side. We were hoping to do a repair and paint job (like we've done in the past) but realized there were some "spots" that just wouldn't look good with just paint. So.....thinking outside the box (which is hard sometimes) we decided to cover those spots with burlap. This may seem ~~weird~~ foreign but it's gonna look fantastic! We're sure of it!
Here are a few pic's of the prep work done. Tonight I'll prime, then a coat of paint (color still being decided) and then we'll apply the burlap!
Although this is a bit of an experiment she is no Frankenstein! I think she's more of an Agatha!
We'll keep you posted!

Here in Wisconsin we've had it pretty good. An amazing winter. I am psyched that we are well into February and have had a mild couple of months.

I can cope.

I meant to take a dozen pictures of the shop today and post 'em but it was a sunless day and they all turned out dark. Maybe tomorrow?

One thing I'm enjoying about the store is, once in a while I have a little time to read. I'm reading When We Were Grownups right now and it's good.

Having Charming B's Coffee Shop upstairs is convenient! A delicious cup of coffee is such a ~~treat~~ staple. So if you're ever in the vicinity, stop in! Patty's Plants (organic) and Facials By Laura (appointment only) are also wonderful reasons to shop at Chapel Specialties.

We are located on the corner of High St. & Hwy 26 in the old church on the corner! Chapel Specialties is definitely unique.

Last weekend it seemed much easier to rent a movie from The Pig than to go out. We decided on Midnight in Paris (new release) and honestly it was nothing short of eye candy! Woody Allen captured every possible beautiful angle of Paris imaginable! And the movie takes you back to the "Golden Age"! I think I was drooling. The plot? Well, it had its moments and I did chuckle a time or two...the scenery/sets, ~~costumes~~ wardrobe and soundtrack? Superb! Worth a view.

Within the last couple of weeks I've had quite a few "retired" ladies frequent Whimsy. Which usually ends up being a lesson for me on some of the vintage pieces displayed in the store. I honestly have learned more about these "old dishes" in the last month than in my entire life. I'm to the point of just flat out asking about the history when I hear "oohhhhh-I remember that!" I'll strike up the conversation on any particular pretty thing. Today I feel like I've learned invaluable lessons on milk glass and depression glass. I also have heard numerous times in the last couple of weeks what exact candy dishes were included in the flour sacks! I know I am simply amazed when different women point out the same dishes sitting on my check out counter as the ones their Mother's coveted when they were little! When I say, "I have candy dish love" they smile and say with a flicker of remembrance in their eye, "so did my Mother." I had no idea that the 50 lb. flour sack was as coveted as the flour and dish that nestled inside. One lady told me that her Mother would make aprons and play clothes from the sacks. Every single ounce was consumed in some way or another. I also learned today from a customer that depression glass was collected by her Mother from the movie house. Date night for her Mother & Father would end with a pretty dish. Which is now a collector item. I had no clue that Depression Glass got its start as an incentive to go to the movies. It was the Depression era. Interesting. And I've heard stories of stamps for dishes from the gas station. (I actually remember something like that in the 60's & 70's).

Of course I did my homework. Scouring the web I found countless stories confirming the ones I've heard here in the shop.

Somehow learning the history of these precious items only adds depth to the delight any of us could have for them..

It's my day off and I plan on staying in my sweats! Oh the joy!

I am inspired by the lines and colors of shoes & purses I've come across.

Even though this blog is dedicated to what Whimsy has to offer, I can't help but keep it personal. It's who I am and yes it allows me to tap into my authentic self. I don't want this to be about "selling:" something all the time. Sure I need to make a living and I will continue to promote the store but honestly at the heart of what I'm trying to accomplish is living out my authentic self and encouraging you and others to do the same.

I say we say to our inner selves, "no more searching, I've already got everything I need...and then some!"

I recently had a conversation with a lady that stopped in at Whimsy for the first time. She took her time when looking around and was very complimentary. I noticed that she seemed to have something on her mind and by the time she was on her way out she did stop to chat for a few minutes.

Not sure if she felt bad for me or just wanted to fill me in that having "nice things" was a dying art. She hoped my business would do well...but...
She explained that she believed having good table linens and china was a thing of the past and that people just don't entertain or do that anymore. I listened and agreed (to an extent) but then I got the opportunity to let her know that people were buying some of the things from the shop and that I believed that there is a new generation that not only is more relational but very intentional in "entertaining" and that it may look different from days gone by but, it's actually thriving!
That there are young ladies buying candy dishes and it's okay if the china they purchase isn't perfect because they plan on using it and not storing it away for only special occasions. That everyday was a good enough reason to use the china. And if a piece gets chipped? It's okay because it didn't cost an "arm and a leg".

With disbelief still in the shadows, she gave me a big smile and once again complimented the store and wished me luck.

I've been ruminating this conversation for days now. Most of us completely understand how much work it is to have people over and to wine and dine them. Sometimes (most times) it takes days of preparation.
Is it worth it? Yes.
It's one way to make your guests feel special. And isn't that what it's all about?

I am encouraged when a young lady comes in to Whimsy and gets excited about a relish dish from the 40's! Because they will make that dish work for them. Whether it's for buttons or jewelry or candy or any other doo dad they can think of! And how cool is that.

Debbie mentioned last night in the comment section that she was changing out her "canister's" to "see thru jars"...
When we moved into our house a year and a half ago I did the same. Which creates an instant country/old fashion feel. And surprisingly the counter doesn't feel cluttered.
It's fun to switch out the food you store in the jars as well.
For instance; marshmallow's in one jar and hot cocoa in the other.
Right now there's rice and wavy noodles in the other.
See the kitchen can have a little fun too!
Notice: this is a great way to repurpose old jars. I used a huge pickle jar once for dried oatmeal and put a scoop in it. Ya gotta love the quirkiness of seeing the Vlasic logo engraved in the glass!
Whatever you do, have fun in your home. Make sure there's a little of the unexpected. There's always the practical and often the beautiful. But, I think some of us struggle with the whimsical and fun aspect.

I think it's pretty fab and adds to the already developed character of the kitchen.

Surprising Thursday!

Today I am the recipient of a "random act of kindness" from a customer. Her name is Rose and she brought in a few very lovely things to give me. The vintage lamp is so beautiful with its scalloped "shade"...I just might take it home for my side of the bed? She told me her Aunt used to put her rings and rosary in the dish shaped base. I just love it! I didn't know Rose before Whimsy existed. Feeling humbled by such generosity from someone I don't know personally...
Inspires me to "Pay It Forward" myself.

My first OFFICIAL day off! No holiday! Just a boring ol' Monday. 'Cept for it wasn't boring at all! My sweet Aunt Mary came to visit from the depths of Indiana and we had a "girls lunch" with us sista's and nieces at Charming B's and then I showed her Whimsy. She hadn't seen it since opening....was fun AND she left with a few treasures!

So, I've been ~~obsessing~~ thinking about the coming months and what they'll bring!
I've got so much going on in my brain----jam packed with ideas.

My Niece Callie M is our family fashionista and as of today she is my official "go to girl" when I need info on designers, sought after clothes and style.
Believe me I need this help when pursuing the whole clothes and accessory thing at the store!

Surfing the web I've come to find some of the most beautiful stores that I've never set foot in. This pic is of one of Helmut Lang's stores. It illuminates my creative side of the brain and I just ooh and ahh over what a store can look and feel like. Sure I like the frilly, foo foo stores that smell of peonies and strawberries but I also like the "minimalist" look that smells of men's aftershave as well.

After texting Callie this afternoon asking her to give me some of her favorite designers, she texted back almost immediately. One of her fave's is Michael Kors and check out his Los Angelos store! It's gorgeous!

Now of course I am a bit of a dreamer but I'm not silly. I'm gaining much inspiration from designer stores as well as the dusty thrift, fully aware that mine won't look the least bit like any of 'em.
Just for sheer inspiration...I'm having a blast!

Here's what I really wear; Chucks and sweats! I'm no designer girl but I'm having fun dreaming of ways I can make that happen for others!

Yes folks her name is Enid Collins! And she is my new idol.
Okay so news flash! Something I'm super stoked about;
This Spring Whimsy will add to it's Vintage and Repurposed theme with accessories, shoes & clothes! I've been collecting shoes and have now started to purchase some "previously loved" women's clothes! Mark will build a changing room in the store. Should be fun!

Sooooo that's where this whole Enid Collins thing comes in center stage!

Here's a mini bio I found on the net:
Enid Collins is one of the most sought after handbag designers in the world of vintage handbags and with good reason, her handbags are nothing short of fabulous and are a must have item for any handbag or clothing collector, with an interest in fashions of the 50s 60s and 70s .....

Enid Collins was born Enid Roessler and she spent her youth in San Antonio, Texas. No doubt drawing inspiration from the local color and scenery for her spectacular handbag designs. She studied fashion design at the Texas Women's University in the 1940's. Soon after she met and married a young, up and coming sculptor, Frederic Collins and they settled on a ranch outside of Medina.

The couple set up in business together making handbags by hand, in linen, leather and paper mache, they were hugely popular, but the slow manufacturing process made them very expensive, so Mr Collins soon found a way of bringing down the costs by simplifying the design.

The husband and wife team developed two main types of handbag, one was a small solid rectangular box bag and the other was a stiffened linen bucket style bag, with leather lid and handle and a wooden base.

Enid Collins bags come in many different designs and they all have a name and are signed with the Enid Collins logo. The bags often feature plastic or glass jewels and hand painted designs, with proverbs and animals often being the central theme.

Another addition to these well made handbags was the little tag which looked handwritten and read: "Please don't drop me on a hard surface, or handle me carelessly! I'm hand-painted and decorated for your pleasure. With a minimum of T.L.C. you'll find me a lasting joy to carry. Love, Your Box Bag."

Enid Collins continued to produced the handbags through to the mid 1970s, when she sold the company to the Tandy Bag Company, they continued to produce the bags for a short time and then ceased.

If you ask an American handbag collector about Enid Collins, they will tell you that every one should have an Enid Collins bag in their collection and once you have one, don't let it go! Enid Collins bags are all highly collectible, with the early examples fetching the highest prices.

The later Tandy bags can be spotted by the horse on the Enid Collins logo. Enid Collins bags were so popular, that they were copied, however, the copies tend not to be signed and are easy to spot.

So in a nutshell. I think I need one! Errr hopefully I'll have one or two to sell.

Celebratory Graffiti!

You'd think that one room wouldn't be that big of a deal to clean up. Putting the Christmas stuff away has taken me literally ALL DAY...still working on it. And pine needles! Ugh! Yes, I had real boughs...to create ambiance and to give the store that sweet evergreen smell. But now? Ugh! Needles everywhere. It's my own fault.
Anywho, it's mass chaos here at Whimsy! It looks like I'm packing up and moving out! Ha-but, it's just that empty bare feeling you get when putting the decorations away. No worries...I have more schtuff! It's packed in the back storage and in my car! My fabulous little Jetta has tons of space! Let's say, she's crammed full. Now to clean stuff up and price it all! Tomorrow perhaps? Perhaps.
I did have a big smile today and wanted to share it with you.
I had about 8 people (family) come in this morning - I know, boxes everywhere...they had good maneuvering skills...One sweet sister spotted a gem!
She bought the vintage typewriter for the other. As the lucky recipient stood there holding her typewriter in its handy dandy case she beamed, "you are good to me!" Ok so then the "crowd" left and I continued on in attack mode of "put those decorations away". So you'll understand that hours later while walking out in the hallway (right outside the store) I noticed writing on this random dry erase board on the wall and it made my day!
So happy to be part of something bigger; two young ladies just as excited about a tired old typewriter as I am!

I know I know! Laugh out loud with me as I say silly things!

I am getting "good" at staying in the moment and enjoying it. "Better" than last year. Not that it's not a bit of a task at times...I have to talk myself "down" or "up".
Last night we celebrated Christmas with loved ones. Feeling melancholy at times throughout the season (missing my mom) yet celebrating the joy of having two Grandchildren coming this Summer! Death...Life...emotional roller coaster...
I find it interesting how gatherings revolve around food. Food is what brings us together. There's something about it isn't there? I agree with those that say it's a spiritual experience. I feel bad for people that don't allow themselves to enjoy it all. I was in that "boat" a time or two. Just trying to get through it. Not really seeing. Not really smelling, tasting or listening. It takes a conscious effort, to enjoy the moment. We don't get it back. That's that.

Once again I'm going to blog about "comments" I've heard... Once again clarifying that I'm just as guilty of saying them...funny how they provoke me for change.

OK so we all know we are here for just a short time. Why not live a little. Throw caution to the wind! I'm not talking about going 267 mph in a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport down Madison Ave. (although that sounds dangerously fun)...
I'm talking about taking a huge yet calculated risk in serving a meal on a beautiful lacy tablecloth! Gasp...Yes, there are spot cleaners out there. If it stains, then so be it. You had a special moment. Better than not having that moment at all.
At least that's how I see it.

Now let's chat about Christmas music. I've heard a couple people complain. But honestly for the most part people are way sweet. They enjoy it. Perhaps having tapped into their Christmas Spirit?
Today I had a nice couple come in the shop saying they were "sick" of Christmas music They purchased Sirius Radio in order to get away from it. That's seems a bit costly. Why is it that people get sick of Christmas music? I'm thinking that there might be a station or two that repeats the same songs over and over again? Not sure. But, I think there could be deeper reasons. The season itself stirs things in us that we don't necessarily like. Painful memories? Feeling the need to spend money when things are already tight? Not sure.
What I am sure of is, life is short. Too short to be ~~grouchy~~grinchy. Christmas will be over in 5 days. Let's try to enjoy it and make a new memory or two.

Tuesday's Talk

Good Morning! Today (Tuesday Dec. 13th) Whimsy is open until 7 pm! 25% off all furniture through Saturday the 17th.

Today has been a little touch and go...but alright now that I'm settled in at the store...
true story;
I made a quick stop at The Pig this morning before coming into work and when looking at one of the displays in the deli area, I proceeded to knock down the entire thing of "home made chex mixes"! Yes multiple containers of Chex mix all over, one of the ladies brought over a broom. I just apologized profusely and slithered through the store and checked out as fast as I could! Oh jeez! I still think someone "rigged" the mix so that when one container was even lightly touched they'd all come crashing down! It was something you'd see on candid camera! Really?! Wow.

Okay so now I wanna talk about a couple of comments I hear often in the store. Comments I know I've been guilty of saying myself.

First comment; "This is pretty but I don't know where I'd put it?"
My unspoken answer; "If you love it, you'll find just the right spot."
What bothers me about the first comment is that so many times we tend to get stuck and we don't allow our rooms to evolve. I have made the suggestion that perhaps there's something in a room taking space that they don't necessarily "love" and that replacing it might be a good idea. A fresh touch that the room needs. Kind of like a haircut or new sweater in the fall.

Second comment, "If I decorate - it's a waste because I don't entertain and it would be just for myself."
My unspoken answer; "It should never be about decorating for someone that doesn't live in the house. It's about surrounding yourself with special mementos and lovely things that make you feel comfortable and happy."
What bothers me about the second comment is the belief that decorating is for others. When we decorate it's an expression of ourselves. Of course I want our guests to feel comfortable but I want those of us that live in the house to be comfortable and surrounded by things we hold dear or is an expression of who we are and where we're at right now in our lives.

I have a few remnants of a phase I went through in the 90's, I discovered art. I made special trips to
The Art Institute of Chicago and would spend hours there and then I'd hop back on the bus and come home. I bought prints and hung them. Eventually I needed a change...my taste changed...Now when I dig through a box I just have to smile when I think of taking it to a second hand store and letting someone else enjoy it for a while.
My latest "craze" ? I found 11 wood carved elderly couples from various spots around the world..they are simply adorable and won my heart instantly! But, the few people that I've "shared" them with find them weird-even creepy was one comment. But, do I care? Not a bit. I will display them (after Christmas) at home until it's time for them to move on. Just keepin' it fresh and different...

We are all on this wonderful adventure called life! I think it would be grand if the homes we live in would emanate that same spirit!

I have two questions for you: What do you need to make your creativity shine through? Why do you keep ignoring it?

Ramblings...

I ended up having a fairly good Monday. Except for one thing; I slowly deteriorated and became pooped which leads to grouchy. This is not good. I have to go to bed soon...
I will not tolerate a day gone sour...on a regular basis...

Winter Hours are a coming.
In about 11 days; stating Christmas Eve I will close at 1 pm and then will be taking more time off. I'm in need of it and I think most people will understand. Here are the soon to be hours; Tuesday - Friday 10 - 5 and Saturday hours will be 10 - 4. That makes an hour less days and two days off. (Jan - Mar) Then probably back up in the hours a bit...

Anywhooo I say this to bring comfort to myself and to actually see the light at the end of the tunnel. Don't get me wrong I love my job and the people...just can't keep this pace...

I sold the farm scene that I blogged about last! A couple that lives in an old farm house in the country loved it and weren't sure where'd they'd put it but decided they'd make a place for it because they liked it so much! Yeah! I love happy endings.

I just love it when women come into the store and say nice things about the things displayed. It makes me feel good that some of the things I've "fallen in love with" are "appreciated". I guess (as Amy says, it validates me) I know I sound a bit crazy but I think you know what I mean.
For instance a framed Santa picture...this sweet little thing...just got a good home.
That makes me happy.

Rudolph...

Okay I bought a new camera! (and it's hot pink!) So, tomorrow I'll post a few pic's of the latest and not so latest at the shop.
Tonight I'm thinking I'm just going to reflect for a bit.

I apologize in advance to those of you that don't know me personally and are here to hear about Whimsy...I tend to mix business life with personal life...

Today was Milton Area Chamber's Christmas Walk. Mark and I took a shift to sell tickets at our Pastor's house (Ryan & Kristin Koenig) from 5-7.
I can hardly believe that a year ago tonight we were on the walk.
Mom came after the walk was officially over (being the little night owl she was) and took a "private tour". It was the first and last time she made her way up to our master bedroom. I remember it like yesterday, she sat on the edge of the bed and just wanted to chat (she was pretty good at "stalling" because it was such a chore for her to do stairs).
So, breathing a sigh of relief we visited for a while. She admired her childhood stuffed Rudolph that I had strategically placed between our pillows...she affirmed me and my decorating skills.
Who would have known that just a month later she'd be gone.
Had I known that I only had a month left with her, I would have quit my job in a heartbeat and would have spent every waking minute with her.
We had a lot of good times the last few years. She was thankful for every single day that she woke up. And so were we...

I remember thinking last Christmas ~this might be the last one...but when someone you love is sick like she was, you tend to think that often and it almost becomes a way of life to shrug it off and think you have plenty of time...

So if you can, I encourage you to spend time with the ones you love...you won't regret it.

My camera is kinda "busted" "broke" "kaput"!!! I kinda dropped it. Oopsy. Then-what's worse is I kinda dropped Jared's camera (son # 3). I'm still not sure if it's gone kaput as well??? Not good.

So, what I'm tryin' to say is, I don't have pictures of the shop....poo.

Okay so let's move on...

besides Christmas and the primping of the shop every day, I've got to admit I'm very very distracted...

I've got babies on the brain! I've never seen so many babies in all my life! I see pink I see blue!

I'm in baby land! Babies in my sleep...

It's simply amazing how 2 little people I've never met can consume so much of my thought and prayer life!

Mark and I can't wait to pray every morning during our coffee time for these little ones...

I know I've needed a little inspiration after doing the store I've got to keep on keeping on and get some done at the homestead. Feeling blessed to be able to tap into my creative juices for a living. Whimsy is the perfect place to express myself. Couldn't be more grateful...

Today I worked on filling "empty" glass ornaments, with hymnal music. They turned out just beautiful and as one little guy came in with his Mum said, "look at these!!!" Needless to say I was delighted.
I think I've priced them affordable at .99 each...I personally hate it when I walk into a store and to achieve the displayed look I have to spend a small fortune. Trying hard to stay true to what's in my heart and pay the rent (and myself). A fine line for sure...figuring it out as I go. But, I'll tell you one thing, it gives me so much pleasure to offer beautiful things at affordable prices. I love that.

Whimsy Thoughts....

Hoping you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I think yesterday was one of the best. Bob & Amy went out of their way to make it special. They opened their home graciously to Mark's parents and Mel (our worship leader at church). It was our first Thanksgiving without Mom and it was comforting to all be together. Amy came up with the idea to have everyone bring a canned good for ECHO in honor of Ma...so grateful for her legacy. She's still with us...

Today is Black Friday and I haven't shopped for even a minute. I did think about heading out to get a cheap TV but didn't. Even though I think we could use one more (we only have 1 in the house) I think that is a little unusual?

It is what it is...I guess we're not that into TV.

So, if you don't need electronics, Whimsy is the place to be!

Well, I'm home...and feeling great about Whimsy's 1st Christmas Open House! It has been a wonderful weekend! I feel so blessed to have the support of so many friends and family! This blog helps me to feel connected to those of you that live in other states and I got to visit and catch up with so many people that took the time to stop by! Wonderful...just wonderful...thank you.
I've got some "primping" to do either later tonight but most likely tomorrow morning before the doors open again. A few holes here and there...that's a good problem to have eh? ! I do have reserve so that's a good thing.

Tonight I'm heading out to Milton Area Chamber's Christmas Walk meeting. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone that's agreed to be on the walk this year and "iron out" the details.

I think I love this quote so much because the decorating experience (at least for me) is NEVER really done! I've got a lot of beautiful Christmas things out but still have a small truck load with much more! The store will evolve and change and grow over the next 6 weeks! That's pretty exciting!

So, we are open for business! It's very festive here at Whimsy! I was able to get a very very short video of the store! If I run the video too long it won't upload on the blogger program...but, it's enough to wet your whistle! You just have to come visit!
There are so many elements that I am pleased with. Thanks to my beloved hubby the mantels turned out more than gorgeous! Included with the unique one of a kind mantel is a log set that has "rolling flame" and a "crackling" log sound. ($349.99) Love it!
Also, I have to give a shout out to a friend Whitney (but more like a daughter) she helped me price everything on Wednesday. Which took ALL DAY!
And last but not least, Amy decorated the trees! They are so pretty! She used what I had for her and I know that they are more conservative than what she'd normally do. Her trees are ALWAYS awesome! Thanks Aim!

Well, it's our Christmas Open House starting tomorrow morning at 9 am - 4 pm and then again on Sunday 10 am - 2 pm...Come be inspired or at least get a snack!

Closed the doors tonight to Whimsy for the next two days to get ready for this weekends Christmas Open House. Feeling pretty good about everything right now.
I painted one of the long walls in the store a "gray" which by the way, when I got home looked more "blue" on my fingers than what I thought.....started thinking I would have to get a different color...but I'm not. I'm just going with it. I have a lot of blueish tones...it'll be fine.
Mark has been working on three fireplace mantels...we'll paint them a white tomorrow and they'll look great with the dark wall behind them. Yes, I'm planning on putting two mantels side by side on the same wall. (3rd one for back up) Should be pretty nifty. At least in my head it does. ha. Funny how sometimes that works and other times doesn't. We shall see.
Not certain yet how much we'll charge for them? Don't want to over price, just want what's fair.
There again, we shall see.
So, I guess I'll sign off for now. Gotta watch the Mentalist and finish my Better Homes and Garden magazine. I've got scads to do tomorrow....but, right now it's rest time.

I think it's safe to say that there are a lot of people out there that really don't like "Christmas".
For various reasons.
Here's a few;
"I think materialism has taken over."
"It's too expensive."
"It's too commercialized."
"I don't want to decorate, it's too much work and then you gotta tear it all down!"
"I'm not superwoman, I can't have the house lookin' like a Norman Rockwell painting, the baking and all the shopping done!"
"I don't want to spend time with family."
and then for some, there's the "cruddy" childhood memories to contend with...those just may be the biggest reason?
I'm always touched by stories that women share about their "happy childhood" memories of Christmas.
But, I'm afraid they might be the minority?
It's a little sad that at times Christmas brings out the worst in me.

To be honest, I think I've said every one of those statements (and more).

What I've learned in my adult life;
1. Plan. (This means priorities...when it's all said and done, what do I want to accomplish this holiday season?)
2. Be realistic. (don't over commit)
3. Make a plan and start it.
4. Let perfection go...
5. Be present...I think this is the best gift I can give to my loved ones.
6. Volunteer. (Salvation Army, Echo...) This can also mean inviting someone to Christmas dinner that doesn't have family nearby.
7. Don't expect too much from family & friends. keep the spirit of giving at the forefront and "live and let live". Because when I don't have this mindset, it's disastrous.
8. Remember the reason for the season.
I could go on...but maybe you can share some of the things you've learned over the years?

For now I'll continue working on Christmas decorations for the store. I'll just keep plugging away at the old hymnal paper chains and burlap chains...

Just needed a fresh reminder before my wheels are spinning out of control.

I woke up to torrential rain this morning thinking of Mom and how she would put her "thunderstorm" CD in and go to sleep. How perfect I thought to mark the 10 month anniversary of her passing...I miss her terribly but am comforted by the memories I have...and the loving family members that surround me.

This kind of family love is simply amazing...
So thankful.

Actually its not! It's beautiful and the leaves are gorgeous! I'm just a freak! I mean that in a good way. I have been on this Christmas crazy train now for awhile! It's fun to plan and scheme and dream in the wee hours of the morning...but then I have to get up and I pay for it during the day!!!!!!
Yesterday Mark and I went Holiday treasure hunting! Fun!
I think I'm just about done with the Christmas buying. (just about)
And to tell you the truth-in true retail form-I've already been around the Spring/Easter track! And I have a ~~huge~~ medium stack of stuff for Summer! EEEEeeeek! Like I said, I'm a freak. >Laugh out loud here!
But seriously folks, life is good and holidays are fast approaching!

Story Telling Straight From Glam Lips

Like I've said a time or two, one of the things I really like are the stories people tell about why they are buying something or even when they tell me about something they have at home stored away in a box in the basement and how they plan on going straight home to unpack it and display it or use it again.
I seriously love to hear people gush...especially when it's something someone special gave them years ago...I can see flicker's of light in their eyes as they recall their loved one.
Inspired. (both of us)
Today I had someone purchase that vintage lipstick holder!
She was tickled to find it! She told me about her daughter that searches high and low for them!
Assuming she was going to give it to her daughter I said, "ohhh she'll like this one..." she cradled it and said, "this ones for ME."
Knowing that it's going to a good home...filled with love for anything lipstick!
Warms my heart....and this is why I love my job.

Chalkboards have sold like hotcakes in the store!
I like to hear what each customer will use theirs for. I sold another one today, the customer said she was going to put hers in the kitchen and write various prayer requests that she's received on it. Seriously, how cool is that?!!!
Another customer bought one to put in her 3rd graders bedroom for when she plays "School Teacher". (It was a big one) That's one lucky little girl......

AND I'm happy to report that there are women out there (here) that have candy dish love like or family!
I have a little quote propped up next to all the sweet lil candy dishes. It reads;

So folks, I'm enjoying the store in so many ways and (true confession) have been a little challenged at times by solicitors. Nice enough folks that want to sell me something or barter. Ugh.
No worries though 'cuz I've been getting good advice from Amy~a seasoned retailer, on creative ways to respond to these somewhat challenging and awkward conversations. It's helped! Gracia's Aim!

I made it in The Messenger Newspaper. The Messenger is a free paper that circulates to over 32,000 on Sunday's and Wednesday's in Janesville, Milton, Edgerton, Footville and surrounding townships.
Check out the article here! Although I like to have the actual paper in my hands, what's kinda cool is, the online version is almost the real deal! If you have your sound on, it sounds like you're turning the page! (I know - it doesn't take much to get me excited...)

er Lipstick.
If you know me at all, you know I do not ever leave home without it. I have a bit of an obsession with lipstick. I am one to compliment lipstick color. I'm not sayin' I've got 500 tubes. I have a few. Literally a few favorites. Rarely do I buy a different brand and I hate paying too much for a tube. Just me. Just sayin'.
I change tones a bit from summer to winter. I want a certain smoothiness not glossy or sticky...just smooth...
I ~~think~~ know this whole lipstick thing started with my Grandma Q. I adored everything about her. I would watch her apply lipstick before leaving the house. To check the irrigator in the corn field. A silent rule she had, I silent rule I have. Um okay not so "silent".
Anywhooo yesterday I found a treasure. An ornate vintage gold metal lipstick holder.

I thought about keeping it for myself but will sell it to another woman perhaps that loves lipstick and lovely things such as this...it will make me happy to see someone else happy. Until then, I'll enjoy it here in the store.

You just plug in an artist or song you like and then it plays the artist and other similar ones. Funny how much I'm head over heals about Christmas! Thinking and brainstorming and dreamin'...for Whimsy's Christmas Open House, November 19th & 20th. Got my Country Living mag in the mail today! Yes, Christmas...mmm mmm mmmm.
I know it's early but not too bad.

Also, I have to share that I'm absolute giddy about some family news we got from our oldest son and wife!
We're gonna be Grandparents! Oh how I love the thought of being, Grandma...just thinking about a wee lil Mitchell babe joining our family next summer, fills me with so much excitement I can't even begin to tell you!

Today was a restful, peaceful day...Mark and I had a "date day". We went to Elegant Farmer and went antiquing a wee bit. On our way out of one of the shops, I got a glimpse of a dog painting...tucked out of the way on the floor in the back of a booth...I went over to get a better look and immediately fell in love! The price was right at five bucks! It's a little on the "rough" side with a few water marks and such but I don't even care...I have never seen anything like it. It brings out the dog lover in me all the more.
I've put it in the living room and can't help but smile every time I look at it.
I love it when treasures "happen". It's almost like time stands still...it was meant to be...
Okay I'm kinda off my rocker. But, you know what I mean-right?

I googled it when I got home and here's the story behind it;

In 1856 the Royal Academy exhibited “Saved” This painting is beautifully composed and once it was engraved by Samual Cousins in 1859 it became as popular as “A Distinguished Member” Based on the fame of Milo, a Newfoundland living with the keeper of the Egg Rock Lighthouse in Nahant, George B. Taylor. In foggy weather Milo served as a kind of fog signal, barking at vessels as they approached Egg Rock. Taylor claimed his dog was as useful as the light. Milo was credited with the rescue of several children from drowning around the island. His fame spread across the Atlantic. Landseer, painted Milo’s portrait, depicting a small child nestled between the dog's enormous paws. The model for the child was Keeper Taylor's young son, Fred.

We also found a fabulous retro desk! (Amy - you're gonna love it!) Can't wait to put it in the store, with the typewriter and rotary phone (from Montana) on it! Very very cool.

One of my favorite designers is Michael Taylor-he should have owned the rights to "The California Style" listen to what he says about the topic of a beautiful room..........

Dontchya just love his thought? I know I sure do.....

Well, so that brings me to share a little wish I have to one day visit the exquisite restaurant that he designed; Fleur de Lys I've read that it was named the most romantic in San Francisco.
Oh yeah...perhaps someday? I mean when the menu speaks of the appetizer's as a symphony...ooo la la (honey? you reading this? ;)

K so I'm chillaxin' here at the store listening to music by Parachute (she is love) which by the way is sweet sweet music...needless to say I'm just enjoying the hard work of moving furniture around...it gave the shop a new look at least for the next few weeks......and then......Christmas! And at Whimsy, Christmas will arrive like a snow storm! Ohhhh yeah! Can't wait!
At Chapel Specialties we will all be hosting a Christmas Open House the weekend of November 18th - 20th. Should be fun in winter wonderland!

Okay first off we had visitors today! Who might that be you ask?!!! Well, it's our own T-4 and husband!!! All the way from Florida! Love my family! I think I'm about the ~~luckiest~~ most blessed girl in the world! I couldn't be more supported by so many amazing people! Thanks Debbie & Lou! Love you! (I even got to eat lunch with them!)

Here's the latest project; a very nice dresser that just needed a little "reinventing"

so, I decided to decoupage music sheets to the top of it.

The music is from an old Methodist Hymnal.

It turned out really cute!

Selling it for $89.99.

The dresser is in really good condition with dove tail drawers.

And the lovely vintage music chain is $14.99.

Wouldn't it be cute as a "buffet table"......

Of course it would be practical in the bedroom doing the hard work it was meant to.

But sometimes that's just "boring".

I say in a music room or even in the office!

It's fun to have something different in our homes.

The people I love...but, not to worry, they're right around the corner in the kitchen or you can hear them laughing and talking in the family room...

Today us ladies (3 new business') in the lower level of Chapel Specialties were interviewed by the Milton Courier. I think I may have rambled a bit. Um yeah.....
Next Wednesday the article comes out. We shall see...

I went to take some pic's today to upload on the blog but the camera was inconveniently dead! So, it's just a little bit of me tonight.

Tomorrow I will unveil the most beautimous painted dresser I've ever seen! (and I painted it!)

So glad the comment section is working again. No idea what I did or how I fixed it. Yeah.....um...'bout that.........

Sorry to all the folks that have tried to leave a comment. I have no clue as to why you can't. Maybe when my computer whiz of a son comes home, I can get his computer wisdom?

I have had a good amount of traffic at the store. Loads of lovely ladies giving me encouraging words. I've sold many items and am enjoying getting more items out of storage and the thrill of hunting for more treasures online and out -n- about!

Well, folks Saturday is here! We've been open for a week and it's flown by!

It has been a good week.

I've met some new friends and some old friends have stopped by. Grateful for all the support.

Yesterday Discover Wisconsin magazine came to Chapel Specialties to do a story on all the business' here!

Looking forward to that Fall/Winter edition.

Below is a pair of folding chairs that we found while out in Montana this summer visiting Rita & Gale on vacation. I decided to put a funky patterned material and "fatten" the seat cushion up a bit. Cuteness factor is 10! How fun would it be to pull these babies out when company comes over instead of the metal ones?!!! oh yeah!

It reminds me of a french style china cabinet and boy ohh boy is she a beauty!

Water damaged top and back were replaced with new by Mark. After removing the hardware, we gave it a fresh coat of primer and white paint. She's certainly far from perfect but ever so lovely.

Here's a couple of snapshots I took yesterday. I like how the Fall colors warm things up a bit. Notice the 4 arm hanging candelabras ($19.99) Aren't they sweet?
Slowly but surely getting inventory out...at a more sane pace.

It's still sinking in that I'm a store owner, and that this whole thing is an expression of myself...it's all a little surreal. But, I'm sure enjoying myself!

So far the last few days have been pretty good. I've got quiet time but also have had a lot of folks come through with encouraging words.
Full of gratitude this morning that I am able to do something I love.

Before I post today I want to explain for a moment some of my thoughts about posting our son sitting (ever so gently) on the sofa yesterday. Not that anyone mentioned it but some of my thoughts were that I hadn't spent time with him in a couple of weeks because we were so busy and consumed with the store. He came to visit and being the "Boss" I felt I could and would allow him to feel comfortable there. Did I hesitate when he sat down on the sofa? Well, as a matter of fact I did. But, many fine people have "tested it out" since it's been strategically placed in the store. What does it hurt? It's been "previously loved" for well into 40 years. Do I want kids crawling all over it? No. What is more important? People.
I have a feeling I won't be the typical business woman. People are more important than things and maybe that's why I love vintage so much. Especially vintage things that have been taken care of. So there is a balance. It's finding it and staying strong in it. That's that.

]So now we'll continue with our regular program...

One of the reasons I love the quote below (besides that it's whimsical) is that it evokes a feeling that all of us have of a favorite place when we were children or even young adults. The feeling comes from the people that lived and frequented that home. The home isn't usually perfect but lovely in its own way. I do think that it takes effort, and a great deal of effort in creating a warm and loving atmosphere in a home.

I'm on a quest to inspire others to take the time in our harried busy lives to create the kind of home that our loved ones will remember, appreciate and carry on.

Today was my first official/regular day at Whimsy and boy does it feel good to be back to work!

Jared came to visit and decided to stay and do his homework (Hermeneutics) I know, Herman who? For those of you that don't know, he's attending The Pointe School Of Ministry at the Whitewater Crosspointe Church. He's in such a good place in his life right now. This makes a Mum's heart happy.

Now 'bout the sofa, it's a sectional (split down the middle) which makes it really unique. Besides the fact that it's gold/orange and cream and is in mint condition! If I say the coolness factor is a 10, I'm not even kidding! The sofa is priced at $149.99.

Thanks to everyone who commented on last nights post! I am feeling rested and thought I'd better share a couple of things with you all.
Mark did make the barn board counter and it turned out fabulous! I have PLENTY of space to work and wait on people.
The authentic barn board table you see in the pictures was made by Mark as well. It's 9'4" long and seats 10 or more! Since it came from inside the barn and was never painted red, we decided to white wash it with a stain. It turned out beautifully!
The price tag on it is, $449.00.
He is taking custom orders now.

Well, I'm back to the couch to ~~take a nap~~ watch the Packers.

Super psyched and I cannot believe the store will open in just 3 days! I am so thankful for all the support I've received from my family and friends!
What a fabulously blessed person I am to have all of you in my life!
On Monday Amy "showed me the ropes" at Market Square Midwest (The Buyers Cash & Carry) at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. It was fun to see what the shops will be selling this holiday season. I walked away with a few treasures but not a lot. Thanks Aim!
